GRAND SPACE ODYSSEY is a massive multiplayer space game about exploring a procedurally generated frontier. Poke at a star system, something weird happens, your crew has opinions, every encounter in this emergent universe is unique like a classic Star Trek episode.
Earth is fine — genuinely fine. Scarcity's solved back home, fully automated luxury queer space communism and all; the frontier isn't refuge, it's what you do with the freedom — wrecks to salvage, modules to wrench apart and sell on, small jobs between the stars. Each system is its own little situation — a colony that solved scarcity by accident, a government run by lottery that works, a people who speak in events instead of nouns. Your crew are people, not units; they have traits and contradictions and they mouth off in character.
Grand Space Odyssey runs in a browser — we're building in public and development is paid for straight by the people playing it. Every euro spent lands on a feature, and contributors can point development at the part of the roadmap they care about. Built to hold thousands of players across a massive galaxy..
Most space games hand you a universe and tell you to go empire and conquer it. GSO's premise is that Earth has it all figured out — we've introduced fully automated luxury queer space communism, the kind that actually works — choosing to head off for the frontier is one of your freedoms. Think of an amalgam of Star Trek, Rimworld, Ted Chiang, and Stapledon's Star Maker. Every star system is a small thought experiment, every culture a different answer to a different question. A frontier of wonder, challenge and mystery.
No binary, play anywhere, Twitch-and-YouTube style — Grand Space Odyssey runs in the browser. We're building it in the open and funding it straight from the people who'll play it: every euro goes on a named feature.
Fool around at the frontier and build a ship, or a massive space palace. Starsector's sprawl, Star Trek's episodic strangeness.
Start as a salvage crew — pull wrecks apart, fix the good bits, sell the crap, help others, make a living, enterprise your way across the galaxy.
A crew of actual people, not units — traits, contradictions, opinions. They talk back, they're wrong, they fight, they love. Every character in the universe has a story.
Star systems as thought experiments — a culture that fixed something Earth hasn't, or an interesting failure.
Run your own universe, or crack a black hole open and link it to a friend's. Dark Souls, but for galaxies.
Fully playable in your browser — no download.
Built in public, paid for by the people playing it.
Why is there a communist utopia and also some guy trying to charge you a toll to use a black hole?? We're working on it.
